Alaska! Today we drove from Anchorage to Talkeetna, and I slept most of the way. It was raining a lot, so we weren’t sure if we would be able to fly onto the glacier, but a window opened up and we went. We couldn’t see a lot during the flight but once we landed it was really beautiful. We set up camp, rigged up our sleds and then ate dinner which was really good. Most of my nerves were gone once we got onto the glacier and I felt pretty good. The next day we were supposed to leave to go to Camp 1 at like 3am, but it was snowing and the conditions were pretty bad, so we stayed at base camp. We had a delicious breakfast of bagels and lox and then hung out in the dining tent for a while. Then we did snow training, crevasse training and crevasse rescue practice. June 13, we packed everything up and moved to Camp 1 moving our stuff with heavy backpacks and sleds. Denali is an unassisted mountain, so everyone has to carry all of their own gear and food. It got pretty hard. My backpack was really heavy and hard to get on. Our guide originally told us it would take 6-7 hours, but it only took us 4.5. The whole time I thought we were going really slow, but we were so fast! We set up camp, relaxed and slept, then had pork tacos for dinner (yum) and went to bed.
