March 11, 2024 - Summit of Iliniza Norte

Yesterday we did a shorter hike to get to the hut where we slept at a little less than 13,000 ft. There are lots of other people in the hut with us going to either Iliniza Norte or Iliniza Sur. There is only one other girl here and she is going to be climbing Denali right before us in May. Today we woke up at around 5am, planning to leave at 6am. We got dressed and prepped all of our gear and then went to eat breakfast. I was feeling good but pretty tired during breakfast. I was eating when suddenly my vision started to get really dark. I didn’t know what was happening and tried taking deep breaths but after a few minutes my vision was completely gone. I laid down for five minutes and my vision came back, but it was very scary. I think I must have slept a little weird and got dehydrated. We ended up leaving later than we planned at around 6:30am. The climb wasn’t super long, but it was very pretty. The sun was rising as we went up and we had a really good view of Iliniza Sur. The climb was very rocky and we got to do some easy rock climbing. It was clear as we went up but it got very windy by the time we got to the summit. When we submitted, we took a few photos and went down quickly because we didn’t want to get cold. We went a different way down so that we could slide down a scree field which was super fun. By the time we got all the way down to the parking lot that we started at two days before, I was very tired. I had many blisters, but I was proud of myself.
